New York State reports a higher than average rate of drug abuse and dependence, especially for drugs such as heroin, opioids, etc. There are many options for treatment of addiction, ranging from luxury residential inpatient programs to state funded outpatient treatment centers.
The state of New York boasts of having the second highest number of drug rehab facilities in the U.S.A. It is also home to the American Society of Addiction Medicine which is a national leader in addiction medicine. New York was the first state to open a mental health treatment facility dedicated for treatment of addiction in 1864.
The state government also provides rehabilitation services in centers and state sponsored services such as methadone treatment. The state-run agency for addiction services is known as The Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). These services include prevention programs, interventions, drug detox, methadone maintenance, residential treatment and outpatient treatment.
Rehabilitation centers in the city usually involve state-of-the-art techniques for detox, withdrawal management, psychotherapy and relapse prevention programs. Peer based services are also a big part of rehabilitation which include people who have recovered from addiction, working through alumni groups, AA and NA meetings and recovery centers. Most rehabs in New York base their treatment around evidence based therapy, pharmacological intervention, proper evaluation and holistic treatment of addiction.
Treatment for addiction is usually undertaken in a place away from one's usual environment, so as to not be influenced by one's usual triggers which could increase cravings. Managing craving in a safe environment in the initial part of one's treatment is important as it helps in building the blocks of one's recovery in the long run. Understanding one's psychological factors responsible for addiction is given priority in our treatment program and is achieved through clinical assessment, interviews and evaluation. A customized treatment plan is designed and implemented for the individual based on this evaluation. The following are the key areas which we focus on in our treatment plan:
Codependency is a common issue seen within the family members or close ones of a person suffering from addiction. It is characterized by a tendency to put the addict's need above one's own and derive one's sense of self from the relationship with the addict.
The codependent in trying to help the addict becomes an enabler for their addiction. The addict may feel guilt or stress due to the consequence of their addiction on the codependent's state of mind. This stress and accompanying negative emotions push the addict further into addiction.
The codependents themselves may suffer from anxiety, depression or chronic fear for the addict's future. Codependency counselling helps rebuild the relationship between the addict and codependent in a healthy way. The issues, expectations from the other and how to navigate through them is learnt in counselling.
This ensures that when the addict goes back home from treatment, they are in a stable and supportive environment instead of a hostile or stressful one. It also ensures that the codependent can rediscover their individuality and derive their sense of self not from their relationship but from within themselves.
